The custom of admiring flowers has been present in Japan since ancient times. At the same time, the flowers also fulfilled a religious purpose. Eventually the Japanese art of Ikebana (flower arrangement) was established, with flowers recognized both as something that one can arrange on their own, as well as an art form expressing the beauty of Japan. During this tour you will explore both the history of this art form as well as the Japanese aesthetic sense and sensibility.

Since ancient times, the Japanese have not only enjoyed the beauty of seasonal flowers, but have also found religious and cultural significance in them. Their pursuit of spirituality through flower arrangement led to creation of “Kado”, one of the three major traditional Japanese art forms. The art flourished further in Kyoto, centered around the Rokkakudo. This tour will trace the origins of the unique Japanese “way” of flower arrangement ikebana in its birthplace, and touch upon the aesthetic sensibility of Japanese people who live in harmony with nature.

Our first stop will be Rokkakudo, famous for being the place where the ikebana culture originated from. Here you can learn about the history of the evolution of “flower” culture in Japan directly from a guide who is also a master of the Sogetsu school of flower arrangement, one of the three major schools of flower arrangement. Your long-awaited ikebana experience under the direct guidance of a master teacher will take place at the several centuries old Kinse Ryokan. For lunch a kaiseki course will be prepared at Hachisei, a Kyoto cuisine restaurant featured in the Michelin guide as well. Its comfortable interior complemented with the beautifully presented dishes offers a glimpse into the ikebana culture. Lastly, we will visit the Tofukuji and Komyoin temples, closely related to the Sogetsu style. Discover new charms of these famous temples as you listen to the explanations of the ikebana master and see the temples through the lens of ikebana - a special feature available only on this tour.
