Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi, is legendary in the Buddhist world in Japan.
Among his many feats he is also credited as the founder of the Kongobuji Temple on Mt. Koya, visited by countless visitors from all around the world.
Kukai is depicted in numerous records as the spiritual support not only of the Buddhist world but also of the people of the time. However, there is a period of more than 10 years where he completely disappeared from the front pages of history. It is precisely this decade that constitutes the greatest mystery of Kukai. According to legends, he spent that decade deep in the woods of Mt. Koya, undergoing strict and strenuous ascetic training.
He then reappeared in the capital and traveled to Tang China to master the secrets of esoteric Buddhism, and upon his return he quickly became a pillar of Japanese Buddhism.

What did the young Kukai see, feel, and embody during his blank decade in the holy land of mountain worship?
This tour will take you down the path to explore the mysteries of the 1,200 year old legend with a real Buddhist monk while tracking the faint footprints of Kukai.

Experience the essence of Buddhism and the spirituality of nature with a mentor, including a pilgrimage along the "Sacred Way" that Kukai is said to have walked, followed by a meditation experience at a temple with a spectacular view.
Lunch will be served at a restaurant in a renovated old house from the Edo period, where you can enjoy a healthy meal using plenty of fresh local vegetables accompanied by the stunning view of the beautiful scenery. Conclude the tour with a special viewing of the hidden Buddha statue, an important cultural asset that is only allowed to be viewed when accompanied by a Buddhist monk.
